How to Make Chinese Five Spice

To enjoy the unique flavours and aromas of Asian and Chinese food at home, this easy-to-make Five Spice is just the thing. Using a blend of 5 traditional spices, it takes minutes to make!

Ingredients: (makes about 5-6 tbsp)

2 x 3 inch piece cinnamon
2 tbsp black peppercorns
2 tbsp fennel seed
1 tbsp whole cloves
5-6 star anise

tbsp = tablespoon
tsp = teaspoon

Directions:

  • Break up the cinnamon and star anise

  • Grind the cinnamon and anise along with the cloves, peppercorns and fennel seeds

  • Sieve into a bowl and it's done!

    Store in an airtight container out of direct sunlight and use within 3 months.

    Note: Dry toasting the whole spices before grinding is worth doing for even more flavours and aromas. See below for info on this.

    How to Toast and Grind

    A few people have asked how I toast and grind whole spices. It's really very easy...

  • Over a medium heat add your spices to a dry pan

  • Whilst stirring or shaking the pan; toast for a few minutes

  • When they start to darken and you can really smell their aromas, they're ready

  • Remove from the heat and let cool before grinding
